This is For The Ladies

So ladies, lets get real about something.  Do you have a current routine that consists of the elliptical machine followed by the stair stepper and maybe a splash of yoga on the side?  If this sounds like you please read on.  You need to add resistance training, like yesterday!  I’m sure you have heard this before and if you haven't let me be the first to tell you, if you don’t do resistance training you will regret it.  Maybe not today or 10 years from today, but definitely in your 50’s and the decades that follow.

When you don’t do resistance training your bones are never “stressed,” this stress or deformation comes from the muscles pulling on the bones while being recruited to lift heavy things (think kettlebells).  Its this deformation that protects bones and increases BMD (bone mineral density).  We could get into more detail, but its really not necessary.  I think the point can be driven home with a few simple questions.  Do you know any women (mothers, aunts, grandmothers, neighbors) who have fallen and broken, fractured or cracked (any of the above) their wrists, hip, or vertebra?  I’m sure you do because the statistics tell us that nearly 50% of women over age 50 will have one of these breaks.  I’m guessing that the thought of this happening to you is making you cringe.  Are you ready to learn how you can prevent this from happening?

Before we get to that I want to highlight one other important fact.  Osteoporosis and risk of bone fractures is not something that you just suddenly wake up with one day.  This is a biological process that takes place in the body over many years and involves many factors like hormones and endocrine health.  There are now loads of medications on the market that can address the precursor known as Osteopenia.  I’m sure some people reading this might be think ok great, I can continue to avoid resistance training because they have a pill for that.  I’m covered!  Sorry to burst your bubble, but all of these drugs come with some very unappealing side effects like GERD, jaw bone damage, and chronic irregular heartbeat to name a few.  What’s really cute is that taking these drugs hasn’t even shown a great risk to benefit ratio where the fractures are being prevented.  That’s right, you take the meds, pay the outrageous co-pays, suffer from the side effects and still break a bone when you fall.

So, if you are still with me I’m guessing you want to find out the secret to preventing the issues I listed above.  Are you ready?  It’s training with weights and my preferable method is kettlebells.  They are versatile and so easy to fit into a busy scheduled life.  I’m a mom with 2 kids and a husband so I know where you are coming from when you say that you just don't have the time!  Kettle bells are hands down the most efficient tool there is to get the bone building workout you need NOW while also getting in your aerobic, conditioning requirements that help you look and feel good:)
